Respecting your new home and your house mates tops the list of our top tips for a happy house share. There’s nothing worse than not getting along with the people you are sharing with. A little respect goes a long way so don’t ‘borrow’ someone else’s food, use their belongings without permission or be overly noisy. Once you get to know your housemates you’ll know each other’s boundaries.

Always set a bathroom timetable. If you do not have an en-suite and are sharing a bathroom its crucial to set a schedule for using the bathroom. Make sure it works around when you have to leave for work and try to stick to it. P.S. make sure you clean up after yourself.

Don’t slack off on the chores front. Making sure everyone pulls their weight in terms of cleaning and tidying communal areas is key to avoid arguments or disputes between house sharers. Remember you’ve now got others to help with the burden of the chores so setting a schedule might be useful.

No pets please! We know you adore your pet but your house mates might not. They may be afraid or have allergies so generally pets are not allowed in shared homes and HMOs.
